Era of a Romantic, Modern King
Prince Harry’s account of his last meeting with his father at Queen Elizabeth’s funeral makes the King’s sentiments clear; he wants his last last years to be peaceful. It is an understandable request from a 74 year old man. Except, though in his last years of life, he is in the unique position of being in his new first year as a Monarch. As much as he would like to, there are some decisions to be made in regards to his exiled son Harry and the monarchy.
The assumption has been that Charles wants to avoid conflict and hard decisions because of his position as a father. However it is important to look at what the king stood for as a young prince and how he has always championed for the evolving of monarchy into the new era.
King Charles in his early years, sympathized with his exiled uncle. Though it took many years, unlike his uncle, he was ultimately able to marry the woman of his dreams without forfeiting his right to the crown.
For a king who pushed for change in royal romance and marriage and ultimately got it, there is no question that Charles believes nothing should come between a man and his love, royal or not. As a king who long planned to modernize the monarchy, we should not be surprised to see some ambivalence to take a hard stance against some changes family like Harry members may insist upon. If his push was for Royals to marry whomever they want and ultimately paved the way, how can he challenge a push for a new kind of change from Harry who represents a younger generation? The problems he and those before him faced were no longer a problem for Harry. The king may desire to offer the flexibility to Harry that he was not able to receive from the Queen. Perhaps he may want to allow some Royal benefit to his son and his wife that the late Queen wouldn’t consider. Perhaps one way he begrudgingly modernizes and allows for a progressive monarchy may be having a working paid Royal family in America as the Sussexes had initially envisioned. Now that he is king, he may overturn Queen Mummy’s banishment of the Sussexes. And perhaps that may stop the couple from running rampant and put a reign on them from a distance. A paid working royal couple in L.A with protocol applying to them may be less damaging than the current unpaid one who has resorted to earning a living by monetizing the Royal relation. It is hard to imagine a paid Royal couple who is not even living in a commonwealth. This may not be what the King had in mind as one of the ways to modernize things during his reign however, paying them may be the only way to keep their mouth shut.
